IndyCar Garage

The place for all INDYCAR fans

What is your favorite place to see a race in person? Is there a place you would like to go, but want to know more information before purchasing tickets/hotel rooms?? Share your experiences here.

I love going to Indy every year...we go to Pole Day and Race Day..it is hard to sum up in words the meaning of Indy in May...it is like a huge family reunion...it is great!

My favorite road course is Mid Ohio. I enjoy this one because it is out in the middle of nowhere...and for only $13 we can go right up to the drivers and garage area...see the cars up close and get autographs of drivers/owners etc...

I love Kentucky for the simple fact you can see the WHOLE track from any seat!! and it is a "night" race...well a night race for the IPS guys...for the IRL guys it is more of a "dusk" race LOL My husband and I get to attend this race for FREE this year thanks to the great people at DownForce I was able to redeem points for two tickets!! That is a great fan club!! (Right Hawkeye and Gary!!)

Agreed. The Downforce fan club has some awesome redeemables.

My favorite track has to be IMS. The history, the sheer size of the place get my attention every year.

I'd like to know more about the St. Petersburg race --- has anyone been? Do you only get to see a small portion of the race? Does that take away from the experience at all?
This is a great topic. I was going to originally post saying Indy is my favorite, but I haven't been lucky enough to travel anywhere else! I recently moved to Ohio so maybe I can make it to Kentukcy or Mid-Ohio! Even though I have been to so many 500's I still think I will like the smaller venues just as much. Open wheel racing is so great and being able to get closer to the cars and even teams would be awesome! Definitely enjoying the post about Mid Ohio. Any other thoughts for a "One Track" visitor? Haha.
Megan...I soooo recommend Kentucky... it is a "short" drive and it is a night race :) If you become a member of Downforce you can catch a ride on the "Indy Downforce Bus" at IMS for only $35..it includes a picnic style meal at the track! I dont ride the bus because it would be out of our way to go to Indy then Kentucky LOL but I have heard a lot of great things about the bus rides :) if you go to http://www.kentuckyspeedway.com you can see the track and they also show you what your view would be from your "seats".... I personally recommend staying out of the high part of the Tower..it is an early August race and that is a LONG walk up there (higher than most seats at Indy)... like I said you can see the track from any seat... ;) Let me know if you are interrested in becoming a Downforce member... I will send you a link via email for you to sign up w/ ;)
Mike - Welcome to Ohio... :) Mid Ohio tickets are VERY reasonable...and it is a great road course.. you can go to http://www.midohio.com and get more information...and even take a "live tour" of the track!! Also racing that weekend is the ALMS series (Acura Sport Car Series)...the Indy Pro Series is racing on Saturday AND Sunday along w/ IRL on Sunday as well!! We are going for Saturday and Sunday and getting the Super Ticket ...that includes Gen. Admission for Friday/Saturday/Sunday, weekend grandstand seats (F-Sun), paddock pass, pit pass and Boatloads of a great time!!!...all of that for only $90 a person a huge huge huge savings than if bought seprately!!! I love this track for the fact that eventhough I cant see all the race I get the chance to meet and talk to drivers ... a chance that I cant financially afford to do at Indy :)
Indy is the only track I've ever been to, and that has been several years ago for the trials. I'm trying to talk the wife into trying Sparta or Nashville this year. Any suggestion on which one has the best views?
You can see the whole track at both places.Ticket wise I think Nashville was a little higher than Kentucky. Ive been to Kentucky every year since the IRL started racing there & Nashville the first couple of years . IMHO KY. is better because they can run 2 wide all the way around . At Nashville back then it was tough to pass in the turns . I know the races have gotten better as the concrete has aged but as for me KY. is better.
SoHoosier - I have not been to Nashville....I would like to since it is a "legit" night race...but Kentucky is a small track and it is open..you can see the whole track...you can follow your driver(s) all the way around w/ out losing sight of them :) The one thing about Kentucky is no coolers are allowed inside the stands...you can bring in unopened bottles of water but that is it.... Nashville I believe allows coolers... Kentucky..you are pretty close to your vehicle to the track so you can hang out and hydrate and eat before entering the track as well ;) even w/ those restrictions I love Kentucky :)
True, DF is a great fan club. My favorite tracks are; Iowa Speedway (duh), Indy, Road America, Long Beach, Chicagoland Speedway, Surfers Paradise, Milwaukee... I like them all however these are my 'preferred' tracks.
Kansas is basically identical to Kentucky. But nothing compares to Indy's freedom. You can bring in anything you want from Kegs to slip n slides. Every other track is just another football or baseball stadium by comparison.Only problem is that they dont hold Indy every weekend !
Can anyone tell me about Nashville? I went online and ordered my tickets tonight...wanted Sparta, but we are busy that weekend. We are 4 rows from the top...they look pretty good.
Indy is the greatest. We go to Pole day, Carb day, and Race every year. With the giant video screens, you can follow the action all the way around, and see replays!

Kentucky is closer to home, and you can see the entire track from any seat. Get to park a lot closer, too.

Went to Mid-Ohio a couple times many years ago in the CART days. Early 90's if I remember. Would love to go back, but right now, the race falls on an out of town vacation weekend. Maybe next year...
