I'm pumped about Indy 500 qualifying this year. The past few years bump day has been a joke with barely more than 33 attempting to qualify. This year with the merger and seemingly renewed interest in the 500, bump day should be interesting. I remember in years past how Rich Vogler (RIP) would jump into a car with little or seat time in the car and qualify with little time remaining to put a car in the field. Lets hope that excitement returns this year.
Qualifying has always been interesting, but the new thing will be Bump Day and the increased traffic level both around the Speedway grounds, and on the track itself. The actual qualifications won't be much different saving those last couple of hours on the last day, but the atmosphere, attitude, and crowd levels will be very different. I'm very excited! I think the excitement of the Month of May will extend beyond the qualifications and onto many of the other events surrounding the 500 including IPS Freedom 100 and Carb Day. I got my fingers crossed that I'll have to deal with a much larger crowd of people to fight through and compete for parking with on Carb Day. :P They would be good problems to have.
