Does the IndyCar Series have a long-term future in China?

Does the IndyCar Series have a long-term future in China?

The IndyCar Series isn’t even remotely close to Formula 1 or MotoGP in fan popularity and commercial attractiveness. Said series is light years behind both. Since the inaugural Formula 1 event/race on the Shanghai Circuit in 2004, interest in the event/race declined significantly. MotoGP after only four years abandoned said circuit. The V8 Supercars (Australia's highest-profile domestic motorsport category) raced at said circuit in 2005. A one and done.

China considers ditching F1 race [1]

China is considering ditching its loss-making Formula One Grand Prix, according to a senior race official.

But the event has not proved popular with local people and attendances have been poor - even with some spectators being transported in specifically to give the appearance of a fuller venue.

China is one of a string of locations which have joined the F1 circuit at a heavy cost in recent years in an attempt to boost their global image, joining the likes of Malaysia, Bahrain and Singapore on the calendar.

With the exception of Singapore, which held its inaugural Grand Prix as a night race in September, all have failed to capture widespread interest among locals.

China has already ditched its MotoGP race, which was also held at Shanghai.

And in January, the head of the track, Yu Zhifei, who helped bring F1 to China, was jailed on corruption charges.

MotoGP: China axe saddens Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner [2]

Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner have said they are disappointed at the decision to scrap the Chinese MotoGP race after just four years.

While the Shanghai circuit is a world leader in terms of facilities and infrastructure, the race receives dire crowd attendance, poor promotion and a lack of commercial interest.

Poor attendance and lack of commercial interest led to the demise/end of MotoGP in China.

New contract brings new energy to Chinese GP [3]

With the contract expired in 2010, some contested that it would be unwise for Shanghai to continue hosting such an expensive event, with the reportedly nearly 30 million U.S. dollars deficit every year and the gloomy attendance rate being the main blame.

Despite of the complaints, race organizers Juss Events and F1 inked a new seven-year contract in February after F1 bosses agreed to charge a reduced rate and the Chinese GP will be extended till 2017. The price of tickets for the 2011 event has been largely cut down and a series of new moves, including allowing some spectators to visit the pitlane after the race, have been made to address problems of the losses and poor attendance.

Shanghai extends F1 race for seven years [4]

Shanghai has extended its deal to host the Chinese Grand Prix for seven more years, organizers said, reportedly after F1 bosses agreed to charge a reduced rate to host the loss-making race.

The race will be extended until 2017, organizers confirmed, saying they would cut ticket prices and address other problems that have led to its losses and poor attendance.

The Shanghai race was first held in 2004 and has seen attendance drop from a peak of 270,000 spectators in 2005 to 155,000 last year [2010], the report said. [low of 120,000 in 2009]

Reuters reported words from the Chinese Grand Prix organizers said Shanghai has extended the deal to host the Chinese Grand Prix to 2017 despite falling attendance.

The premier open-wheel racing series on the planet isn’t exactly setting the sport on fire in China , and the worlds premier two-wheeled racing series stay in China was very brief/short lived. The global image/status of the IndyCar Series is not even remotely close to that of F1 and MotoGP, in fact its not even in the same ballpark. The inaugural IndyCar series event/race in Qingdao may be big/draw a very large crowd, but most likely after the inaugural event/race, like F1 and MotoGP, attendance/interest for the IndyCar Series will decline.

My answer to the question at the beginning of this post…I highly doubt it. Most likely no.

Moreover, I doubt the IndyCar Series/Terry Angstadt plan/vision of a 400,000+ plus seat clone/replica of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway would have any long term success in Qingdao. Formula ones peak attendance in 2005 was 270,000. 400,000+ for a imitation of the Indianapolis 500 in China? Maybe for the inaugural event/race, but thereafter I would expect like F1 at Shanghai, a major decline in attendance/interest. Long term a clone/replica of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at Qingdao could share the same fate as said speedways clone/replica that was built in Ontario, California.

Interesting info, GLC.

Low dolla make Bernie holla?

F1 could care less about how many show up in the stands. All of their money if up front plus TV revenue.

I would think all the INDYCAR China money is up front also.

For sure Randy's Great China adventure will be short term.

Well to be fair..this is Angstadt's folly.

But itll be just another one and done if the ICS mgt doesnt get their way.

Drop the sanctioning fee by 50% and there will be plenty of tracks HERE that would be willing to host an ICS race.

The chinese dont play, even moreso than Bruton Smith..and we all see how well that worked out for the Cowboy and Co.

Christ Randy, wht not North Korea next season.

My wife and I usually enjoy traveling to as many races as possible during each season, but the thought of being taken prisoner by the Chinese military and perhaps executed seems to be a turn-off.  Hell, I'm all for Communist regimes that treat their people like vermin hosting IndyCar events, but Elkhart Lake appears to be a shorter trip.  Just Sayin...

I stand corrected. The Peoples Republic of Elkhart Lake...
