INDY 500 COMPETITION NOTES:
The 1st Indy 500 was held in 1911 and has run every year since, except during both World War I & II.
Only 3 drivers have won the Indy 500 4 times: AJ Foyt Jr., Al Unser Sr., & Rick Mears.
Last repeat winner was Helio Castroneves: 2001 & 2002 for Team Penske. (but Paul Tracy thinks he won the 02' race, after an official complaint, Helio was awarded the victory)
Helio Castroneves is the last rookie to win the race (2001).
Team Penske has won the Indy 500 a record 14 times,...UPDATE: now a record 15 Indy 500 wins with Helio's 09' victory!...however, in 1995, his two cars failed to qualify for the race w/ former winners Al Unser Jr & Emmerson Fittipaldi.
Only 5 women have ever qualified for the Indy 500: Milka Duno, Danica Patrick, Sarah Fisher, Lyn St. James & Janet Gutherie.
Only 6 women have ever attempted to qualify: the 5 above and Desire Wilson (she failed in her attempt).
Danica Patrick is the only woman to ever lead the Indy 500, (19 laps) and coming within 6 laps of winning the race (in 05'), finishing 4th. The highest finish for any woman in the 500...UPDATE: Danica Patrick broke her own record for a female by finishing 3rd in the 09' race!
Sarah Fisher is the fastest woman at Indy. Qualifing at a speed of 229+mph (4-lap average).
Sarah Fisher has been voted "Fan Favorite Driver" of the Indy 500 3 times since her rookie season in 2000.
In the last 13 races, only 3 American born drivers have won the Indy 500: Sam Hornish Jr in 2006; Buddy Rice in 2004; Buddy Lazier in 1996.
Most career Indy 500 starts: AJ Foyt Jr with 35.
Nobody with the last name of "Smith" has ever qualified for the Indy 500. (Smith is the most common last name in the United States).
No Car # beginning with "0" has ever won the 500. (example: #02 or #06)
Car Numbers that have NEVER won the Indy 500: 10, 11, 13, 18, 19, 21, 22, 29, 33, 37-47, 49, 50, 52-65, 67, 69-81, 83-90, 92-97, and no three digit numbers are used.
At 220 mph and IndyCar travels the lenght of a football field in approximately 1 second.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Track Record is held by Arie Luyendyk Sr. at 237.498 mph (37.895 seconds to travel 2.5 miles around the track in one lap). Arie set this record in 1996 driving for Byrd-Treadway Racing.
Only 7 of 93 Indy 500 mile races have been rain shortened and 5 others have had postponements due to rain and only one was schedule for less than 500 miles.
Lowest starting spot to win was 28th, in 1911 and again in 1936.
Closest finish: .043 of a second; Al Unser Jr over Scott Goodyear in 1992.
Approximately 70 people have died participating in the Indy 500 some capacity: drivers, crew members, firefighters and spectators.
The last death at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway came in 2003, when driver Tony Renna of Chip Ganassi Racing lost control in turn 3 during a tire testing session in October.
