xorpheous replied to Paul's discussion 'Welcome Rubens'
He can't find a ride because he doesn't bring $$$ like the younger drivers do. Do you honestly think that Maldonado would have a ride if he didn't bring bags of Hugobucks from Venezuela?

I don't know that I'd call a driver who has more Formula 1 grand prix starts than ANY driver in history, 10 wins, and repeatedly near the top in championship points a 'reject'. Rubinho has serious talent, and he'll be a…

Another "preaching to the choir" article. It's a great article, and it's spot on, but most of the folk that read Kirby's article, are already of this same mindset regarding innovation and a more open regulatory environment.…

A rainy day at the track is better than a sunny day at work!

Other pages of mine

In real life, I am Professor of Astronomy at Johnson County Community College.  Been there since 1993 and it's the best educational environment I've ever seen at any institution, large or small.  You can check out my website there at http://blogs.jccc.edu/dpatter.

I also help my beautiful wife, Tabatha, run her photography business Patterson Prints.  She sells fine art photography and does product and property photography as well as outdoor portraiture for clients in and around the Higginsville, MO area.  We have some shots of IMS in our Motorsports album as well.

Lastly, I serve as the Chief Photographer and Mazda Road to Indy Editor for OpenPaddock.net.  I started work with Shaun and Mike back in early 2009 and its been a heck of a ride! We started a formal partnership with the IndyCar Garage earlier this year with Tyler offering forum updates for us, and we promote the Garage as our recommended site for fan interaction.

The Business Focus of INDYCAR Fans

Posted on April 28, 2011 at 11:07am 2 Comments

In today's Q&A from Curt Cavin of the Indianapolis Star, April 28: On standing starts and TV ratings, he ponders why fans of motorsport [especially INDYCAR] are so fixated on the business of the sport, TV ratings, and the rulings.

" I don’t know why so many people have to be so critical of everything that’s done in motor sports. As I told Randy…

Regenerative Shocks

Posted on February 3, 2009 at 1:06am 0 Comments

We've all heard of regenerative braking, but there's been a technology lurking about that could both aid a car's handling characteristics while recovering energy at the same time: the Power-Generating Shock Absorber. Recent news articles, like this one at AutoBlog.com, tout this as a new and recent discovery or invention. The fact is, this… Continue

Heartland Park Topeka
I know the Runoffs happened two months ago, but this has been a very busy semester so please forgive the tardiness of this post. The 2008 SCCA Runoffs were held for the third, and last, time at Heartland Park Topeka on October 10th through the 12th. Tab and I were able to attend on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday and wow what an event! First of all, HPT is a… Continue

2008 RedBull Indy GP - Race Day!

Posted on September 18, 2008 at 8:31am 0 Comments

Fans in their rain gear

We watched the weather report on Sunday morning with great interest. On Saturday, the prediction had been for increasing clouds and thunderstorms, some heavy, through out the afternoon. They couldn't have been more wrong as Saturday was hot and sunny all day. So when we saw the prediction of the remnants of hurricane Ike hitting the track midday we thought, "Yeah, right. They said that yesterday, too." Well, this time they got things exactly right.… Continue

2008 RedBull Indy GP - Saturday

Posted on September 16, 2008 at 1:22pm 0 Comments

Saturday started out slightly overcast, but rapidly became sunny and hot. With all the rain from Friday, it also became incredibly humid! We did run into the strangest sight of the weekend, two cars parked next to each other from completely opposite sides of the automotive design spectrum. We couldn't help but laugh at the scene.

As we made our way across the infield, we stopped along the back stretch to watch some of the riders wizz by on the much… Continue

Re the Austin track layout/configuration. Being breif, IMO just another common/status quo/old school road course Tilke offering, nothing special/revolutionary. Personally I am not impressed with Tilke's track layouts (likewise nor are the majority of the F1 drivers), but that said, where Mr. Tilke does excell is re the architecture/support structures at most of the facilities he designs. It is my understanding that several organizations/individuals may be calling for a boycott of the Austin USGP. GLC
