I have been a fan of A.J. since I was 10 years old and I used to go with my folks to see him run at Texas World Speedway. Being from Houston, I was able to go to his Chevy dealership and meet him. That's what the pictures are of that I have have posted.
That being said, I can't understand why year after year, every weekend, they can't get a handle on setting up the car. The IRL is over 10 years old and A.J. is one of the originals. It would seem that they should have some pretty good data on most of these tracks.
Every race they have a midpack finish and talk about all they have learned, then the next year...more excuses.
There is always a rained out practice session or a bad pit stop, or something breaks. It's hard for me to believe that the racing gods have stacked the deck so much against this one team.
I am reading the starting line up for the Sonoma race, and Manning is starting 21st. I thought he was supposed to be a roadcourse expert, and this would be one of the places for the team should shine. But no.
I know that they are running at a severe disadvantage being a one car team. I don't know if A.J. just doesn't want to field a 2nd car, or he just can't line up sponsors. Which would be a shame that a living legend in the sport cannot attract sponsors, while Andretti can find sponsors for 4 teams. Maybe A.J. doesn't want to play the "driver brings the sponsor" game.
Whatever the reason, they need to get it together soon I think. The CART guys will be more competative next year and will force Foyt racing to backmarker status again.
I will continue as a Foyt fan and root for this team. Although it would be helpful if ABC supply could fill just one of the 3 orders I have tried to make to get some racing gear.
O.K. I feel better now.
